This March, we spent our Spring Break in Los Angeles immersing ourselves in various facets of the restorative justice movement. We spent time with the Jesuit Restorative Justice Initiative (JRJI), Homeboy Industries, and the Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC) exploring the realities and truths of gang culture, profiling, prison culture, law enforcement, reentry, related policies, and current work being done in these areas. Most memorably, we visited the Sylmar Juvenile Corrections Center and a medium security California state prison in Norco, CA. We will be sharing stories on behalf of those we met who are currently spending their days in jumpsuits and cells. Not only sharing their struggles, we hope to illuminate their achievements and stories of hope and what they mean for us, as individuals and as a society.
Katherine Kelliher is a student at Saint Louis University studying Political Science, Communication and French. After graduation on May 15, she will move back to her hometown in Chicago where she will work as a journalist and continue to spread awareness of the restorative justice movement.
Anne Milne is graduating this month from SLU with a Masters of Public Health. While her immediate next steps are still unfolding, she is pursuing public health and social justice work in prisons, reentry, and community violence prevention.
