Compensations

In the last year I’ve been losing my words, evidenced at this site by my almost exclusive posts of one-liners by others (mostly by the saints and mystics). Rather than kvetch about this diminishment ( how many times did I quote Jack Kerouac to numerous friends—”Accept Loss Forever”?), I am able to treat myself to the blessing of music. Two examples:  I frequently listen to Glenn Gould’s  Bach recordings, especially the Toccata in D, which brings me  joy and mirth.   And no matter how many times I’ve heard Bob Dylan’s  song Tangled up in Blue, it still triggers wonderment:  “And every one of them words rang true/ And glowed like burning coal/Pouring off of every page/Like it was written in my soul from me to you…”

Oh, but there’s also Duke Ellington’s “Take the ‘A’Train”
