Brother Angelo was much afraid of evil spirits and asked Francis to let a brother sleep in his cell and keep him company at night. Francis said to him: Why fear weak and feeble foes whose strength, as you well know, is under God’s control? And so that you may prove this to yourself, I command you to go tonight alone to the top of yonder mountain and cry out in a loud voice: Come on now, you proud devils, do your utmost and vent your fury on me! The friar humbly did as he was told, and no devil came near him; so from then on he lost all fear of them.
