Share the Wealth with Carol Mock–Beauty Draws the Eye: Daylilies and the Limits of Finitude

Carol Mock has been growing daylilies since 1996, when she wandered into a garden club sale at the Missouri Botanical Garden. The club was (and is) called the Greater St. Louis Daylily Society. She purchased a few daylily plants that day, but she told the man who was handling the sale, “Why are these plants so expensive? I am reluctant to buy perennials that cost $25!” The man, who later became a good friend, assured her that she could create her own varieties of daylilies without spending so much. For Carol, that was the beginning of a hobby that has grown into a demanding obsession: hybridizing new kinds of daylilies in the backyard.
