“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” ~Howard Thurman
Melissa will talk about her passion for helping others learn to take charge of their wellness through self-care, presence, and doing things that make them feel alive. She will share her website, some photography, and a little drumming.
Growing up in Minnesota in a suburb north of St. Paul, Melissa was an overachiever in almost every way. After graduating from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology, she married her high school sweetheart and poured her blood, sweat, and tears into roller derby for almost a decade while working at the University of Minnesota. After reaching her highest goal of making Team USA in 2011, she realized she was lost and allowing her life to be led by her ego. In 2014 she realized she needed to move to a warmer climate and settled on St. Louis in March of 2015. After three years full of loss (grandfather, divorce, two cats, loved one to suicide), she has realized the importance of self-care, being present, and giving back to the community. She currently works at Washington University in the School of Social Work and enjoys drumming, acroyoga, kickboxing, being creative (photography, painting, poetry), and being a member of the St. Louis Meditation Mindfulness Sangha.
