The Way It Looked in 1973

In March 1973
Israel’s prime minister Golda Meir
Paid a visit to Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger

Politicians shmooze as easily as they breathe
Meir was grateful for US support of Israel
And urged the Americans to support persecuted Russian Jews

After she left
The most powerful men in the world
Reverted to frank talk

Kissinger:
“The emigration of Jews from the Soviet Union
Is not an objective of American foreign policy

And if they put Jews into gas chambers in the Soviet Union
It is not an American concern
Maybe a humanitarian concern”

Nixon:
“I know
We can’t blow up the world because of it”
